Technical Challenge My hard drive containing publishing and other programs, thousands of pictures, documents, E-mails with valuable links and information, etc. is history. There were warning signs...a variety of strange errors as well as slow startups and shutdowns. As the situation worsened, I attempted to do a recovery, not a destructive recovery which erases the files. It didn’t work. I toted the computer off to a technician who was unable to retrieve the missing files. Windows XP was reinstalled but the serious glitches continued to occur. Another attempt to reinstall listed four vital missing files and a hard drive error. It was not only a computer catastrophe for me but a major embarrassment due to the fact that I’ve never done backups...not even taking the time to learn how to use a CD, external hard drive or memory stick. I just worked away, enjoying every moment, oblivious to the fragility of a computer A few years ago, I had a similar problem...ailing hard drive...but my late husband, Barry, using two computers, was able to salvage what could have been a total loss of all files. Soon after, on May 26, 2006, Barry transferred pictures, links to favorite sites, documents and E-mails to CDs. He subsequently reminded me occasionally about the importance of backups. If only I had followed his routine for his own computer files which he backed up every day or every time the computer was in use and any changes took place. A few days ago, I put a CD in the slot and discovered the easy task of saving. I followed that with the memory stick, and then an external hard drive. It is, unfortunately, too late for the four years of lost programs, documents and photographs that were stored on my main computer. All pages currently published on the internet are safe and you’ll be able to continue to read them. I do, however, have to bring them back into my publishing program before making any changes or additions. There will be a long road ahead of copying and pasting to my publishing program. One of my first efforts will be to put links back on this main page because I understand that many of you have been using them to access other QCT pages or other web sites. - Mary Mouzar
